Real Life Experiences That Will Help You Write Realistic Scenes

Have someone who knows what they’re doing take you to a gun range and teach you to shoot a variety of gun types. Take note of the hand placement needed, the kickback, and your accuracy with each.

Get to a full run and then scream. Take note of how long your breath lasts.

Go to a Renaissance Festival and have a costume seller put you in a proper corset. Attempt to bend over in it.

While you’re there, try on some armor and, if possible, try wielding a sword two- and one-handed to get a sense of movement, accuracy, and strength required.

Take archery lessons.

Try to keep your head above water in a wave pool.

Try to punch something underwater.

Go to a nature trail. Try to walk through the woods beside the trail to get a sense of travel with no clean path available.

Go to a nightclub and observe how people actually dance when they’re out on the floor.

Take a self-defense to learn the most effective ways to break a hold and the ways that won’t work.
